You've probably received one in your mailbox at some point: a newsletter. We also sent out a brand-new newsletter last month. Why is creating a newsletter an important part of your marketing strategy? You can read all about it in our new blog.

Why a newsletter?

Newsletters are a popular form of email marketing. They allow you to keep customers informed about what is happening within your company. Think of innovative services, a new face in the team, or other relevant news.

According to the Content Marketing Institute (2020), 87% of B2B marketers in North America use email as a distribution channel for their content. For B2C marketers, that percentage is 79%.

A newsletter has several advantages. It provides important branding for your brand, ensures the measurability of your goals, and allows you to share high-quality content. With your newsletter, you can achieve certain goals such as expanding your network or even generating additional income by including subscriptions or advertisements in your newsletter. We have listed the things you need to pay attention to when composing your email:

Do's when creating your newsletter:

  • Choose a catchy subject line
The subject line is the first thing readers see when your email arrives in their inbox. Reading the subject line determines whether someone clicks on the email or not. So create a subject line that is relevant, but also short and interesting. Examples include asking a question to encourage the reader to read on.

  • Make the newsletter personal
Of course, you can include interesting facts and figures in your newsletter, but also add a personaltouch. Customers want to know what is happening within the company, and figures do not always say anything. News such as an employee's birthday or a customer gift makes the newsletter more personal.

  • Be brief and concise
Customers are often busy enough and don't have time to read a thousand-word newsletter. Not to mention the short attention span we have these days. Be brief and concise in your newsletter and refer readers to your website for more information, where the entire article can be found. Think of about three to four columns or sections for a good newsletter layout.

  • Work with images
It's true that images don't always improve loading times. However, it is still advisable to use them in your newsletter. Images attract attention and add atmosphere, especially if they are personal images. The photos really stand out alongside all that text. But don't overdo it. The images must, of course, remain relevant. For example, you could add an image to accompany a short text about an article.
  • Ensure interaction
Make sure you don't just send out messages, but also create interaction. For example, ask your readers a question and answer it in the next newsletter. This will make readers feel truly involved with your company.
  • Add call-to-actions
The purpose of your newsletter is to encourage readers to take action: for this, you need call-to-actions. Use clear and creative CTAs to encourage readers to click. Ensure readers know what to expect when they click on a button. The trick is not to overdo your call-to-actions. Limit the number of buttons, otherwise your readers will get lost in the CTAs of your newsletter. For example, use only one to encourage readers to take action so they don't have to think about which button to click.
  • Ensure that your newsletter works on every device
Not everyone opens their email on a desktop computer. Customers can also click on your newsletter on a mobile phone or tablet. And if the text and images are misaligned and no longer readable, they will quickly leave. So when creating your newsletter, make sure your email is suitable for every device, in other words: ensure a responsive design. For example, with large buttons that people can easily click on their smartphone.
