Step 1 – Decide what you’re going to write about
It’s best to write about topics you know the most about within your own field. If you really can’t think of a topic, you can use one of the following “templates” to get your blog started.
“10 Ways to…”
“…., where do I start?”
“10 Steps to…”
“Dos and Don’ts for…”
“Step-by-Step Guide…”
“What to Look Out for When…”
The most important thing is to really entice people to read your article and drive them to your website.
Another useful tip when choosing a topic is to look at the
Google Keyword Planner (in Dutch, “Google Keyword Planner”). This is a free tool from Google that lets you see how often certain keywords are searched for, helping you determine which keywords are best to use when coming up with topics for your blog.
Step 2 – Create a mind map
This step is optional; once you start blogging more regularly, you’ll find that you’ll need it less and less as you write.
But in any case, create a mind map. You can do this quickly and easily with online tools such as
Bubbl.us. Use your mind map to gather topics you can cover in your blog.
For example, if you want to write a blog post about how to attract more website visitors, you might include the following in your mind map:
- Social media
- Google/search engines
- Advertising –> Local and Online
etc., etc.
Step 3 – Start writing blog posts!
Just start writing blog posts; once you get going, it usually turns out pretty well. If you’re not sure about your blog post, have a friend, acquaintance, or colleague take a quick look at it. Someone else can usually spot mistakes that you haven’t noticed yourself. So it’s really helpful!
SEO Optimization
Of course, blogs aren’t just useful for converting website visitors into leads, but also for boosting your “Page Authority,” improving your website’s visibility through multiple keywords, and attracting people on social media to visit your website more quickly.
However, it’s important to remember that you write blogs for
people not for
Google. So don’t try to come up with strange phrases in the hope that you’ll rank higher on Google, because Google has an advanced system in place to prevent this kind of “spam” and will penalize your website by removing it from the search results.
But in any case:
- It’s a good idea to include the keyword naturally in your text several times
- Try to use as many words as possible—at least 300, but a blog post of 900+ words is best.
- Link to relevant pages in your blog post, such as useful online tools that are relevant to your blog post.
- Include at least one image in your blog post that is relevant to the post, and make sure the keyword appears naturally in the "alt text."
- Make sure the keyword appears in at least one heading (H1 through H6)
- Create a good meta title and meta description, and make sure your keyword appears at least once in each one in a natural way.
