Learning by simulation, VSTEP does it

VSTEP specializes in developing simulators for education in the maritime sector. A complex product; how do you best present this on your website? JKC took on the challenge together with VSTEP. Discover more about the positioning and other aspects of the development process.

In short

VSTEP's simulators are a complex product. With JKC's help, we position and present the simulators in a strong and compelling way.

Tania Bozheva Brand Manager at VSTEP

A professional ship flight simulator

“VSTEP has been around for over twenty years. We produce software and hardware for training at maritime organizations,” says Brand Manager Tania Bozheva. Think of it as a kind of professional flight simulator, but for ships, adds Marketing Team Lead Walid Assal. “The maritime sector is incredibly large, with training and deployment as key components. VSTEP offers the option to learn through simulations.”

“The website is one of the first points of contact for customers,” Tania explains. “That’s why it’s important for it to look good. We were looking for a company that could help us with that.” Following a recommendation, the company ended up choosing JKC. “We got in touch with Justin and immediately got a good impression.”

Much more complex than a lipstick

A website’s functionality—such as speed—is one of the most important goals, while the visual design must also remain appealing. Tania: “We wanted a partner we could trust to handle an effective migration, and JKC delivered successfully.” Furthermore, news articles are very important to VSTEP, as they aim to position themselves as experts in the market. “The structure must encourage reading, because that increases the chance of generating a lead.”

VSTEP’s products are highly visual and complex. “It’s not comparable to selling, say, a lipstick, which is easier to position and understand,” Tania explains. “A simulator is a complex product, with different types and target audiences. We sat down with JKC to determine the best positioning and presentation.” One example is the simulator display, where you can hover over all elements to see the name and explanation. “That’s a good way to show what we do, without making it too complex but still grabbing people’s attention.”

Smooth and good cooperation

Tania explains that the collaboration got off to a good start right away. “Since our product is very visual, Justin visited regularly throughout the entire process. You really have to see the simulators to fully understand what they are and exactly what VSTEP does.” Furthermore, communication was smooth and efficient. “Even when things didn't go as expected, responsibility was taken and action was taken quickly. That builds trust,” adds Walid. “Since the shareholders and management were involved in the process, both we and JKC had to remain flexible throughout.”

To the next level

The foundation is in place; now it is time for the next steps. Walid: “The website is live, and with that, the foundation has been built. Now the focus must be on findability. So, SEO is high on the agenda.” But VSTEP also wants to take a closer look at optimizing the customer journey, for example. “We need JKC’s expertise for this. In design and development, but also in the thought process to make the website an even more valuable asset.” If it is up to VSTEP, it will not stop at just developing the website, Walid indicates. “So far, we are certainly satisfied with the collaboration, but we would like to take it to the next level.”
