5 tips for a good website

Tip 1: make your website easy to use

Every website starts with usability. If your site is not pleasant for visitors to use, they will be gone in no time. And that is not what you want. A user-friendly website comes down to a number of things. Think of the speed at which the site loads, for example. Research by marketing tool Kissmetrics shows that almost half of all internet users expect a website to load in 2 seconds or less. Unoptimized images, for instance, are a common source of slowness for sites. If load speed is a problem, check what is slowing your website down. Another important part of usability is good navigation. If you visit a website and have no idea where to find the information you are looking for, you quickly give up too. So make sure you use clear headings (not ‘information’, but ‘our range’ or ‘our history’) and that your menu is logically structured and clearly visible.

Tip 2: make sure the design is good

When the design of your website matches your brand identity, visitors recognize you immediately. Design choices such as a logo with a slogan are entirely up to you. Do carry that style through consistently, because it creates a professional look. Something else visitors appreciate is when your site is responsive. As we explained in a previous blog, that means your website adapts to the device it is viewed on. Research shows that we increasingly buy things on our mobile phones. A responsive design is a great way to respond to that.

Tip 3: use valuable content

Show clearly what you have to offer your customers. A good way to do that is by putting clear copy on your website. That copy forms the foundation of your professional site. Good copy leads to more conversions and better positions in search results. Show your successful projects or cases. Try to keep adding new content to your web pages, such as blog posts or news articles. A website that stays current gains more authority and climbs in search engine results. So besides your visitors, Google also likes it when you show up regularly. One more tip: link internally within your website. That keeps visitors around longer and lets you share your valuable content.

Tip 4: pay attention to SEO

So you finally have a beautiful site and compelling copy, and still you are not getting many visitors. That may be down to your SEO. If you do not pay attention to search engine optimization, customers will not find you. So when you develop your site, research the keywords that matter for it, or have that research done for you.

Tip 5: use social media

A good way to reach your target audience is by using social media. You can share your blog posts on Facebook and LinkedIn, among others, which brings readers straight to your website. And when they like your post so much that they give it a like, you reach even more people. So let social media come back on your site as well, for example by clearly placing social sharing buttons on your web pages.

A professional website

And one last tip from us, completely free. Your site has to be free of errors and, of course, hacker-proof. That sounds obvious, but always double-check it. The last thing you want is someone else messing around on your website. We hope our tips help you improve your site. Want to see an example of a perfect site? Then head over to the JKC Media website.
