How extensive is the visual identity?
A visual identity can be very extensive or a bit simpler. Perhaps you do not need envelope designs or notepad designs at all for your business, and you can easily save money by leaving them out of the design work. It is a good idea to discuss this with your graphic designer, in case you do need them in the future. In most cases, this is the basis you need for your business:
- Logo design
- Business card design
- Letterhead design
(Looking for a designer? We offer all of the above in our visual identity ‘starter’ package for just € 199. Take a look at the offer!)
Revision rounds?
The number of ‘revision rounds’ (the number of times the design is reworked, usually based on feedback from the client) is crucial to how the cost of a visual identity design is built up. You can save money here, but then be very clear and precise with your graphic designer during the rounds you do have. Otherwise you will still have to schedule more rounds later and pay extra for them.
Have the designs printed or arrange it yourself?
Will you have the designs printed by the graphic designer, or arrange the printer yourself? Many people think it is cheaper to arrange a printer yourself when you have hired a graphic designer for your visual identity. That is often true, but the margin the graphic designer charges for it is fairly minimal. And on top of that, the problems are yours if the printing goes wrong, whereas otherwise the designer is responsible for it. That is why we recommend having it printed by your graphic designer. That is certainly sensible if you do not have any experience yet with having designs printed.
Reliability and quality of the graphic designer
Of course, rates differ among graphic designers too, which sometimes makes it look attractive to hire a student for a few tenners, so to speak. But have you taken copyright and licensing into account? Or the professionalism and skills of the graphic designer? Or whether the designer will also be available if you want more designs in one consistent look? It is also important to look at your graphic designer’s portfolio to check whether he or she delivers good quality (in your personal opinion). This often says something about the graphic designer’s experience, and therefore also about how well that designer can help you with your project. Unfortunately, there is also still a lot of fraud in this industry. Always check the company details, and call a company once, for example, to verify that it really exists.
