How extensive is the brand identity?
A brand identity can be extensive or fairly simple. You may not need envelope designs or notepad designs at all for your business, and that is an easy place to save money by simply not having them designed. Do keep in mind that if you go that route, you should discuss with the graphic designer whether it will still be possible to have those designed later on, in case you end up needing them after all. In most cases this is the basis you need for your business:
- Logo design
- Business card design
- Letterhead design
(psst, we offer all of the above in our brand identity ‘starter’ package for just € 199. Take a look!)
Revision rounds?
The number of ‘revision rounds’ (the number of times the design is reworked, usually based on feedback from the client) is crucial to how the cost of a brand identity design adds up. Saving money here is usually possible, but keep in mind that you then have to be clear and precise with your graphic designer in the revision rounds you do have. Otherwise you may waste all your revision rounds and end up paying extra later anyway.
Have the designs printed or arrange it yourself?
Will you have the designs printed by the graphic designer, or arrange a printer yourself? Many people who hire a graphic designer to create a brand identity assume it is cheaper to arrange a printer themselves. That is usually true, but the margin the graphic designer makes on it is normally quite small. And on top of that, more importantly, you have no problem on your hands if a print run goes wrong. In that case the graphic designer is responsible. So we recommend having your graphic designer handle the printing, which is especially sensible if you have no experience yet with getting designs printed.
Reliability and quality of the graphic designer?
Rates naturally differ among graphic designers, which sometimes makes it look attractive to hire a student for a few tens of euros, so to speak. But have you already thought about copyright and licensing? Or about the professionalism and skills of the graphic designer? Or about whether that designer will still be available if you later want more designs in a consistent style? It is also important to look at your graphic designer’s portfolio to check whether the work is of good quality in your personal opinion. That often says something about the designer’s experience, and therefore about how well that designer can help you with your project. Unfortunately, there is also still a lot of fraud in this industry. Always check the company details and, for instance, call a company once to verify that it really exists.
