WordPress dominates 33.3% of the internet

What is WordPress exactly?

You may never have heard of it. WordPress is an open source content management system that has been available since 2003. WordPress stands out for its ease of use, its practically unlimited possibilities and the fact that it is completely free (at least, the WordPress.org version, not the WordPress.com version).

Why are more and more people choosing WordPress?

WordPress has many advantages. For example, WordPress is:

• Fully open source. This means the source code of the system is shared freely and openly, so many developers can contribute to it.
• Very user friendly. It is relatively easy to maintain and update, both for developers and for site owners.
• Easy to index in search engines. WordPress is optimized to be indexed well in search engines such as Google.
• Secure. Although some web designers disagree, when it comes to security it is usually better to choose a CMS like WordPress (which hundreds of developers help with voluntarily every day) than a custom built CMS.

So is WordPress only used by small websites?

Certainly not. There are even government agencies and large international companies using WordPress. A few examples:

How was this WordPress trend able to develop?

How can a content management system from 2003 dominate more than 33% of the entire internet 16 years later? This is probably down to how easy WordPress is to use and the possibilities within the system. On top of that, more and more web designers and internet agencies work with WordPress. In fact, over the past few years the term WordPress internet agency has become a household name online.
